Community General Foundation History

Founded in 1957, Community General Foundation was first organized as the "Community Fund." The fund's mission was to raise funds for a new community hospital.  In just a few months, the fund raised $7.2 million - making it the most successful fundraising effort of its time.

After Community Hospital first opened its doors on January 1, 1963, the Community Fund became inactive for several years.  However, its efforts were eventually needed again as the hospital added programs and services.

In 1985, the Community Fund's certificate of incorporation was restated in the name of "Community General Foundation."  A board of directors was elected and members agreed to support the hospital by raising funds for specific projects.  The Foundation has since contributed over $22 million to Community General Hospital.

Community General Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization and contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Community General Foundation Mission

To focus public confidence and attention on those priority programs and service needs at Community General Hospital which can only be addressed through the application of private philanthropic support.

To Our Donors

 Thomas Quinn, President & CEO

2009 was a year of historic achievement for Community General Hospital. The hospital began construction of the new 25,000 sq. ft. Center for Orthopedics and also expanded its services thanks to the support of Community General Foundation donors. This year’s increased philanthropy is illustrated by the generosity of the late Helene Schroeder whose planned gift afforded the hospital the opportunity to purchase a stereotactic bioposy machine for the Wellspring Breast Center. The services we offer, and the growth we have seen and are planning for in 2010 are made possible by the support of our friends. I thank each and every one of you for your contribution to this great facility.

Scott Matukas, Board Chair

The national headlines in 2009 all reiterated economic misfortune – they spoke of decreased profits, fewer donations for non-profit agencies, and individuals and families coping with financial struggles. In stark contrast, Community General Foundation closed the year with historic levels of success generated by a community of committed donors. I am honored to chair Community General Foundation and be witness to the sincere commitment of its members, committees, staff, donors and friends – new and old. Together, you have helped us to reach new heights, and I thank you.

John Zacharek, Vice President & Executive Director

The generosity of our community was never more apparent than in 2009. Despite a global economy stricken with unrelenting hardship, the friends of Community General Foundation helped us surpass the historic levels of success earned in 2008. Your support helped the hospital purchase the Acuson X300 Ultrasound System, new patient beds, a discharge instruction system and the stereotactic breast biopsy system. On behalf of Community General Foundation, Community General Hospital and the thousands of patients we serve each year, I thank you for your unwavering support.
